For all of the current lovers of Rumi deli in Trastevere, sorry in advance for blowing up your spot, but it had to be done.
Rumi is fairly new – it has only been open for a year and 3 months.
If you haven’t been yet, then my advice is: run, don't walk. Unlike any other deli I have come across during my time in Rome, Rumi is a paradise for health enthusiasts.
The owner, (who is incredibly helpful, and speaks both Italian and English, P.S.), completely nailed it. First of all, just check out their website: http://rumibottegaorganica.tumblr.com/ - it is inviting as well as being up to par with current trends in the health-food realm.
Everything sold in Rumi is organic and local. The owner doesn't buy from big distributors, just small businesses. The small local places that he gets his products from are, in his opinion, better because it ensures good quality.
Rumi has a mix of vegan, natural options, as well as gluten free. It is a mix of Mediterranean, Indian spices, Oriental spices as well as having products of typical Italian cuisine.
You can buy products there – such as quinoa, kefir (amazing for good gut health and not so easy to find in Rome), yogurt, almond milk, rice milk, coconut water, honey, fruits, vegetables, etc., and there is also food that the owner prepares himself to eat on the spot or to-go, such as: bagels (is this real life?!), salads, fruit and vegetable smoothies, wraps, and deserts. The best part is how creative these options are – you are not about to get a gluten-free bagel with low-fat cream cheese (sorry, but that's just boring) – instead, he creates sandwiches that are not so run-of-the-mill and instead incorporate different vegetables and artisanal cheeses and meats. For those vegans out there, he offers Saitan (a healthier alternative to tofu, aka without soy which is BY THE WAY a pseudo-health food).
To top it off, even their wine is good for you (big plus in my book!!) because it doesn’t contain sulfites. In case you were wondering what sulfites are, exactly:
“Sulfites are a group of chemical agents added to food, beer and wine that prevent bacterial growth. The term "sulfites" includes sulfur dioxide and the salts formed from sulfurous acid, such as sodium sulfite or potassium metabisulfite. In the mass production of wine it is also used to prevent browning of white wines and to quickly end fermentation”

Be sure to make your way into Trastevere to try this unique, healthy and welcoming deli. Everyday there are 7 new dishes as well as a dessert – and believe me, you do not want to miss out.
